Scene Analysis - Deutchland 83

Opening + Semiotics: East Berlin

The first thing we see is a building, looks more quite expensive, city-based, modern, looks functional rather pretty to look at. Tells us East Berlin isn't pretty but maybe functional, communism and eastern world is functional but dull. A bit bleak.

Typewriter noise; comes up when we see text - connotes military, operation, we can see the genre of the show already just from the sound given; we're watching something historical and military.

Then we start to hear the voice of Ronald Reagan. Mid shot of woman with her back to us, cold, she doesn't care, she's pushing us away. Ronald Reagan 'evil empire' speech - triggers a crisis of 1983. Use real footage of Ronald Reagan, not an actor, makes it feel more authentic, gives us a feel to the drama. Postmodernism

Next scene - colours, plain, boring, dull, connotes dullness, coldness, East Communist side is dull, functional and boring. They end up laughing at the end of the scene, it complicates that everyone in the east is by the books, official etc.

Another Scene; Chess Scene
  • Lightings, colours - pale, colour has been drained out of the scene. Harsh Lighting
  • Costume
  • Piano - Not like a guitar or anything.
  • Trapped - Behind Bars
West Berlin Scene:

  • More colourful; cars, clothing & shop
  • Clothing; Puma (Branded) western. capitalist, Jeans (Rebellion) - Cowboys - West. West of American, Jeans are a key sign to understand as it's the most western clothing you could have. Adidas - Brand, German Brand
  • Richness of colour, sense of abundance - a lot of everything, you can have everything in the west.
  • Sweet Dreams - The Rhythmics (Western Band, British Brand) Chunk of Budget is spent on rights to music, a lot of well known 80s music that would've cost them a lot.
  • Song - Iconic of the 80s. Nostalgia, Dream world for him.
  • Lighting is brighter on them rather than East Berlin.
Comparing East V West:
  • They're both outside and eating.
  • Second one has more food, first one has more closeness everyone interacts.
  • Party in the West has a big display of food - Abundance.
  • Party in the East seems nice, everyone having a nice time; familial warmth they all seem to care about each other.
  • Colours in East are duller
  • By saying that East has a familial warmth contradicts what we said before about the East being dull and boring.
