ADVERTISING IN MAGAZINES:

  • If magazines did not advertise then it's cover price would be 3x or 4x greater
  • INCOME for a magazine comes from both of the sales and advertising
  • Advertising succumbs 70% of the magazine's income.
  • Any Magazine with a small circulation is more dependent on advertising than one with a larger circulation.
APPEALING TO THE ADVERTISERS:
  • Magazines allow the advertisers to target an audience very precisely.
  • Can include free gifts 
  • Steven Watson made a new subscription service called Stack, this gives the user a monthly surprise magazine that the service might think they like.
  • Ride Journal, specialises in a niche but growing community of cyclists in London. not just for cyclists but also for commuters in London
  • Boat Magazine, is a nomadic application which moves around and picks up on the cities, global magazine with a hyper local field.
FUTURE OF MAGAZINES?
  • Pay walls could happen
  • Times has already started doing this, they charge people online to view their newspaper.
  • E-zines are starting to exist, where people can electronically go through a magazine. 
  • Looks and behaves just like an ordinary magazine. 
  • If there's an advert in the E-zine you can click on it and it will take you to the advertised product. 
  • Super Niche / Independent Title. 
  • Freemium, free magazines packed full of advertising.
  • Social Media feeds...
