EARLY DAYS:
- from the age of 8 he started coding.
- a mini 6-12 month project.
- used to be call ''cave game''
- 2009, minecraft released.
- quit his day to set up his company MoJang (2010)
- independent media company, had a nice friendly vibe to it.
RISE OF MINECRAFT:
- 1000 sales in 24 hours.
- They make $250,000 in a day.
- Allowed people to use their creativeness, build and represent things in their mind.
- Creativity was a real draw for gamers.
- Basic Graphics = very accessible / nostalgic. Some say those awkward blocky graphics do facilitate their creativity.
- Allows Modding. High level of audience engagement.
- Notch, in particular was interacting all the time with audience.
- Won Game of the Year (2010 UK), year it was released as well.
MICROSOFT TAKEOVER:
- 2014 was the date for the takeover.
- Mojang now exists as a subsidiary.
- EULA (end user license agreement) = rules set by a gaming company about what the user can do with it, e.g. what sort of mods they can create.
- So Gamers were no longer allowed to sell off their own mods, Notch felt as if this could protect against viruses but some people did make business off this so negativity started to spiral
- Twitter users started sending hate towards Notch.
- Notch then jokingly sent a tweet saying he would sell Minecraft and Mojang off. He received offers, but accepted Microsoft's offer as it was the fastest and most realistic offer and he also worked with them prior.
- Vertical integration; companies controlling all means of production.
TODAY:
- Now available via cross-platform gaming.
- Minecraft film coming out soon.
- You can play in a story mode.
