DAILY MAIL & GUARDIAN ANALYSIS.

DAILY MAIL: Shooter games cause brain damage, Super Mario improves the game. Supports effects theories: Cultivation theory; they tested children for 90 hours and this seemed to lead to brain damage and possibly alzheimer's Moral Panic = stirring up fear for parents, scaring them to think their kids are getting brain damage from this game.  PROBLEMATIC: Real ethical problem by saying the kids will get brain damage and alzheimer's and then forcing them to play the games so they would most likely get these problems in the future.  We don't know the background of these kids, are they happy? are they violent at home?. There is an after brain scan and no before brain scan. Data is very weak, no solid data, no statistics. Very shaky piece of evidence.  GUARDIAN: Looked in more depth at a study that seems to suggest  Spoke more about children of the 90s States Gaming is not real , suggests kids know this.  Looked to see if the children WERE actually engagin

Autcraft attracts autistic children as it allows their creativity to rise, they can build anything they want and they can make friends on Autcraft too. Autcraft is a speical server that allows no bullying so it’s a safe space for autistic children. It improves teamwork with children which can boost their social skills. Minecraft is helpful to kids as in the article the writer tells us a little anecdote on how there was an autisitic kid and he was struggling with switching schools and his parents gave him a plan of his new school, later the child built the school on Minecraft and when he went to the new school he knew exactly where he was going.  The educational version of Minecraft which is designed for classroom purposes has specific features which include: team building, access to only part of minecraft, access to many different elements.  Minecraft used for educational purposes really boosts a child’s creativity and innovation. It also helps children to understand agriculture

Effects Theories

Effects Theories: A group of media theories that examine the relationship between media products and their audience. They very firmly take the attitude that the media is more powerful than the audience. This group of theories sees the media as powerful and the audience as weak or passive. There are other audience theories that make the audience seem more active but effect theories show the audience to seem quite weak. History: From the 50s people had TVs in their home which meant they had access to the media.  Due to them becoming affordable. Receiving a lot of messages from the media via television. Then in the 60s media studies was launched as a subject. The focus was mainly on the effects the TV had on their audiences Assumption was we all did the exact same thing with the information being given from the media. Effects theories emerged in the 60s. Said that the media are powerful that control the masses and that they're a ''Hypodermic needle'' injec

Task 4 / Campaigning adverts and audience readings

Be Food Smart In this essay, I will be analysing the Be Food Smart  campaign. The campaign was designed especially to raise awareness of an individual's diet. There are two main audiences here; young children and their parents. We know this as near to the end the child states ''to help you and your kids find a healthier start to the day.'' the direct address of ''you'' breaks the fourth wall and creates a sense of immersion. The entire video has a very authoritative tone to it. The child narrating brutal punishments such as teeth falling out can really scare a younger person; making them think twice about their sugar in-take also the whole campaign helps the child's parent persuade their child into taking up a more healthier diet. But this whole brutal aspect of the campaign really contrasts with its theme of bright colours and the fun stop-motion. The campaign also uses statistics which makes the audience ''85 sugar cubes a mo

Audience/Platforms/Ownerships notes

Some thoughts on audience, platforms and ownerships: Ownerships: Ownerships; there are different models of media ownerships Bigger conglomerates (organisation with a range of different subsegeries) subsegeries are smaller companies owned by different companies e.g. microsoft, they make hardware, computers, consoles, software etc. Microsoft has a huge ownership in subsidiaries for games.   Main conglomerate is Google, subsidiaries include youtube.  Smaller companies are not often but might be independent, make their own choices and experiment a little Audience interactivity/consumption mods; your own creative input on a game.  change the settings to your own fitting. you can share mods, creates a sense of community. you can also customise characters. make up your own teams. cosplay newer gen games are cheaper so people can move to the next gen consoles. demos Platforms: PS4 XBOX DS, 3DS,  NINTENDO SWITCH iPAD, Tablets
