Newspaper: Page Layout and Media Language
Newspapers can be defined as broadsheet or tabloid, broadsheet tend to be bigger and tabloids tend to be the smaller ones. Although you can get ''compact'' broadsheet papers (to save production costs) which would be the same size as tabloids.
Examples of these would be:
- The Times
- The Guardian
- The Independent
TABLOID:
- Normally feature popular articles that tend to appeal to the masses, this would be celebrity gossip or human interest stories
- Tone of these are more informal and informative
- Comedy; Jokes and wordplay used in headlines
- The Adverts are aimed towards lower social groups
- Uses more image than text
- Examples of tabloid would include: The Sun, The Daily Mirror, The Daily Star, The Daily Mail.
BROADSHEET:
- Features 'quality' articles including political and international stories
- Tone is formal and informative
- Headlines are more factual and direct
- Adverts target higher social group
- Text used more than images
- Examples of broadsheet would include: The Times. The Telegraph & The Guardian
CONVENTIONS OF A NEWSPAPER:
Adverts and incentives:
Paid Advertisements that have been incorporated into the newspaper often to encourage the audience to buy the paper.
Colours:
Every single newspaper has a black and white scheme. Tabloids may be more colourful. 'Red Tap Tabloids' (The Sun, The Mirror etc.) are thought to target lower socio-economic groups.
Headlines:
This is the largest piece of text, it summarises the content of the articles.
Subleads:
Smaller than the main headlines and explain more about the story
Images:
Photographs or pictures used to illustrate the article. (When talking about this consider shot type, framing and mise-en-scene)
Sidebar:
Smaller articles listed at the side of the paper
Masthead:
This will usually include the name of the newspaper, the design/position should remain consistent to be traditional of its brand.
Byline:
The Journalist's name & Details
Standfirst:
This is the first paragraph, it usually gives us a brief introduction and outline of the story
Columns:
To organise the image & text on the page
Caption:
Titles given to the images used
