Music Video Exam Notes

Defining Terms:

Viewpoints & Ideologies (how media products lead us to think a certain way)

Media Terminology (cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, sound as well as genre conventions)

Emeli Sande - Heaven
  • Religious Iconography - Asking for Forgiveness?
  • Political viewpoint - criticizing governmental responses to homelessness, austerity in Britain
  • Hope; Images of children, children with family, viewpoint & ideology around family, links between mother and child.
  • Key Genre Convention of the star image; lip syncing, star image performing, some of the cuts are synced up to the beat.
  • Non Linear approach, showing us real life, real stories in a non-narrative way.
Radiohead - Burn The Witch

  • Anti-Capitalist (Context of Radiohead)
  • What the video tells us about british society and british society in 2016
  • Against a certain idea of britishness, shows us this perfect idea about a perfect village and then it critiques it.
  • Socio-economic groups
  • Mono-cultural/mono-ethnic setting (social context of EU/Trump)
  • Intertextual references
  • Challenges codes and conventions of music video; no star image, no performance, it has a clear linear narrative story, music videos don't really tend to do that.
