Music Video Notes (2)
POSTMODERNISM:
- A mix and match aesthetic
- taking influences from different genres
- the appearance is as important, maybe even more important than the meaning behind.
- Blurring of time and space
- non-linear narratives
- breaking the fourth wall
- INTERTEXTUALITY is when deliberate references are made to different media products.
- The music video is only understood if the reference is understood,
- Mixing fantasy and reality (simulacra - Baudrillard)
GOODWIN'S FRAMEWORK ANALYSIS:
- Think of the authorage
- Basically the star, the author of the video.
- The way they present themselves
- Authorage implies that the artist literally stamps their own visual style onto the music video.
- This makes them more recognisable to the audience.
- Establishes the representation of the artist; their sexuality, dress sense, beliefs and values.
- Authorage can ADD to the star quality.
- Ariana Grande is an example of this
GOODWIN'S FRAMEWORK OF ANALYSIS:
Goodwin (1993) also suggested that some useful themes to analyse and consider in relation to music video and it's relation to the audience.
