The Big Issue:
  • 2000 traders out on the street selling the Big Issue.
  • Sold over 200 million copies.
  • The Big Issue has inspired 120 similar street magazines.
  • Their primary objective is to be a independent publication that will offer a public service and improve a social problem.
  • Hybrid genre (entertainment + social business)
  • It costs £2.50 but / £1-25 goes to the trader. So the trader is making business
  • Only homeless people are allowed to sell the big issue.
  • John Bird calls this 'Ethical Capitalism'
  • This means using profit or a business model to do some moral good.
  • In 2013 the Big Issue made more than £5m
  • 100 people approach the big issue foundation every week.
  • Most publishers will use a distribution network that works on a no-sale-or-return basis. This is basically when the magazines that are sold to shops don't go for sale so they're then returned back to the publishers, this is costly and wasteful.

  • To create a voice for the homeless people.
  • Campaigns on homelessness
  • Covers entertainment through interviews with actors etc.
  • Political lobbying (anti-brexit)
  • Their slogan is 'A Hand Up Not A Hand Down'
  • They're all about charitable acts in the community for diversity.
  • They covered remembrance day, for war veterinarians. 
  • Low production values mean cheaper cheap paper/recyclable.

Who were the Big Issue?
  • They were founded in 1991
  • John Bird was the founder of the magazines.
  • John Birds and Gordon Roddick were both founders.
  • It was a publishing revolution
  • Vendors would buy the big issue and then sell it for double the price.
  • It was a social enterprise.
  • Not a charity, it was a business solving social problems.
  • It is global and can be found in countries such as Australia and Japan etc.
  • In the UK alone there have been over 200 million copies since 1991.
  • Profound social effect.
  • The Big Issue sells ethical products.
  • They invest in money that will lead to other social enterprises.
  • They provide finance to other social enterprises.
  • John Bird became Lord John Bird when he was knighted for his work on the homeless.
  • He actually came from a homeless background.
  • Has won 22 major publishing awards.
